Reading and Speaking in Church

a practical workshop on effective communication

To be able to speak and to read aloud clearly and engagingly are important skills, but ones we tend to neglect. Communicating effectively matters – and never more so than when what we are trying to communicate is God’s word.

We’d be surprised if our musicians didn’t bother to tune their instruments before playing in church, or our choir members turned up to sing without having rehearsed their pieces. It makes sense to help our readers and speakers prepare properly too.

This hands-on practical workshop will help those reading and speaking in church learn to:

• engage listeners effectively
• bring out the key points in a text or talk
• relax and feel more confident in front of listeners
• speak clearly and expressively
• understand how basic vocal and physical techniques enhance communication

Reading or speaking in church is not a performance and is not about the reader or speaker showing off their skills. It is a privilege and responsibility, and if we want to serve to the best of our ability, we’ll want to do it well.

Sam Pullen-Campbell (BA Hons Drama) is Co-Creative Director of Christian theatre company LAMPS Collective. She has over thirty years’ experience of teaching, directing and workshop leading and loves to help people build their confidence and communication skills.
